La Flor Dominicana's newest limited edition arrives as a five-cigar set built around hardware: a genuine carbon fiber travel case from accessory maker ProjectCarbon, holding five 6 x 54 toro extras. Under the hood it is classic LFD muscle, a Mexican San Andres wrapper over Dominican filler from the family's own La Canela farms, billed as full-bodied with an 89-point reception so far. Production is 1,500 sets, which works out to $40 a stick if you treat the case as packaging rather than product, and that is the real question. Accessory-forward releases gamble that the object outlasts the novelty, but LFD's track record on full-bodied limiteds suggests the blend inside may be the point after all. Either way, it is the most literal take yet on the industry's packaging-as-premium trend.
