Lounge Rules Nobody Hands You at the Door

Every lounge runs on the same three-part constitution: respect the cigar, respect the people, respect the room. Everything else is commentary, but the commentary matters, so here is the field guide version.

Buy where you burn. Smoking outside sticks in someone's lounge is the equivalent of unpacking a picnic in a restaurant; most shops expect you to purchase from their humidor when you use their chairs. And if the shop lends you a cutter, do not wet your cigar before using it. The house cutter touches everyone's smokes after yours.

Handle the fire with some grace. Let your ash build to about an inch and roll it off gently rather than hammering the cigar on the ashtray, which can crack the wrapper. When you are finished, resist every cigarette instinct you have: lay the cigar down and let it extinguish itself with dignity. Stubbing releases an acrid stench that will follow you to the parking lot in reputation form.

Finally, mind the social weather. A person with a book, headphones, or a thousand-yard stare is enjoying their cigar exactly as intended; wait for an invitation before joining a conversation. Never brag about your humidor, and never reach into another smoker's stash uninvited. The lounge is one of the last rooms in America where time moves slowly on purpose. Move at its speed and you will always be welcome back.
