StillWell Star Loses a Blend, Gains a Sweet Cap, and Bets on Aromatic

Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust's StillWell Star line has always been an oddity: a handmade cigar built around pipe tobacco. Since its introduction five years ago, the portfolio has existed in a single 6 x 52 toro format with four regular-production blends and a limited holiday release. This week the refreshed line began shipping to retailers with a smaller menu and a sweeter personality.

For 2026 the number of blends drops from four to three. Two are new combinations of earlier recipes: Aromatic Dulce Claro is a hybrid of previous Holiday blends, while English Dulce Maduro is a tweaked version of English No. 27. The third, Aromatic Dulce Maduro, is the original Aromatic No. 1 blend under a new name. All three are offered in the existing toro and a new petit robusto size. Production remains at Fábrica de Tabacos Joya de Nicaragua S.A., and Cornell & Diehl still supplies the pipe tobacco.

The bigger change is the sweetened cap across the entire line. Saka told halfwheel that sales of the sweeter aromatic blends had grown while English and Bayou styles had slowly declined. The market, he said, clearly prefers sweeter, more aromatic options. The new color-coded bands are a practical concession to the same reality: when a brand narrows its lineup, it has to make the remaining choices easier to spot in a humidor.

StillWell Star was never a volume brand; it was a proof of concept that pipe tobacco could live inside a premium cigar. By streamlining the blends and leaning into aromatic demand, Saka is treating the line less like an experiment and more like a product that needs to justify its shelf space. The pipe tobacco is still there. The question is whether enough smokers want it sweet.
