Tabacalera El Artista Signs a Landmark Cooperation Agreement with China Tobacco

Some announcements land quietly at InterTabac, and some rearrange the furniture. The signing between Tabacalera El Artista and China Tobacco, formalized in Dortmund, Germany during InterTabac 2026, belongs to the second category. The two companies entered an international cigar cooperation agreement covering cigar development, manufacturing, technical exchange, and international distribution, and they used the moment to unveil its first fruit, the Taishan · Artista project.

Taishan is the cigar brand of China Tobacco Shandong Industrial, the state tobacco giant's Shandong arm. It is a name most American smokers have never seen on a shelf, but it carries real weight abroad. In September 2025, China Tobacco International (Hong Kong), the listed overseas arm of the state monopoly, signed an exclusive global distribution agreement for Taishan cigars, extending its reach from duty free channels in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, and Thailand to the entire world outside the Chinese mainland.

The project itself is a study in symmetry. Two cigars share one blend, but they are born in different hemispheres. A Toro is rolled in the Dominican Republic by Tabacalera El Artista, while a Pyramid is produced in China at China Tobacco Shandong's factory in Jinan. Same recipe, two factories, two flags.

The blend has an unusual passport. Radhames Rodriguez of Tabacalera El Artista developed it in China, working shoulder to shoulder with China Tobacco Shandong's own blending team. Every tobacco in the project comes from El Artista's own supply, so the Chinese-made Pyramid will burn Dominican leaf, a quiet inversion of the usual direction of trade in this industry.

The rollout is staged and deliberate. Taishan · Artista makes its commercial debut in Hong Kong and Macau in December 2026, with CTIHK overseeing distribution in both markets. Spring 2027 brings the project to China Duty Free locations in mainland China, followed in summer 2027 by China Duty Free doors across the Asia-Pacific region and the domestic mainland market. The Dominican-made Toro, meanwhile, is slated for the Americas and Europe in late spring 2027, distributed by TCD Logistics and Tobacco & Cigar Distribution.

The Dominican partner here is no newcomer. Tabacalera El Artista is a third-generation family operation in Tamboril, in the Dominican Republic's Cibao region, founded in 1956 by Ramon Don Pulita Rodriguez and now led by his grandson Radhames Ram Rodriguez. The factory has spent decades as a quiet powerhouse, growing its own leaf and producing millions of cigars a year for its own portfolio and for others.

For China Tobacco, the agreement pairs domestic production and unmatched market access with the blending and manufacturing craft of an established Dominican producer. For El Artista, it is the widest door the family has ever walked through. The companies describe Taishan · Artista as the first cigar initiative under the agreement, which leaves the framework open to future work in blending, manufacturing, tobacco, and international commercialization.

What remains unknown is almost as telling as what was announced. Pricing, production quantities, and further specifications for the Toro and Pyramid were not disclosed, so any talk of volume or cost is lore until the partners say otherwise. Watch the Hong Kong and Macau debut in December 2026. It will be the first real measure of how far this partnership intends to go.
